Metallica has donated $50,000 to Haiti via its All Within My Hands foundation.
On August 14th, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake shook Haiti, destroying over 50,000 homes, with a confirmed 2,200 dead and rising. Flooding from Tropical Storm Grace, which occurred less than 72 hours after the quake while the island was still experiencing large aftershocks, destroyed roads and impeded rescue efforts. Haiti, which was still rebuilding after the 2010 earthquake and reeling from the recent assassination of its president, will take over a decade to recover from this disaster.
Metallica’s donation went to Direct Relief’s Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, where it will be used to bring medical supplies and first responders into the disaster area.
“Tragedies such as this are precisely why All Within My Hands partners with Direct Relief for our work in ‘critical local services,’ as outlined in our Mission Statement,” reads AWMH’s statement on the donation. “Direct Relief has supported healthcare providers in Haiti for nearly 40 years, including a significant, multi-year response after the devastating 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince. Since then, Direct Relief has delivered more than $321 million worth of medicines and supplies into Haiti and is committed to continuing this support well beyond the current emergency.”
All Within My Hands Foundation is a non-profit foundation established by the members of Metallica in 2017. Recently, AWMH has donated $645,000 to COVID-19 relief organizations, from Feeding America to charities supporting the hamstrung live performance industry. It also donated $350,000 to those displaced by the West Coast wildfires of 2020 and 2021.
It’s much too early to put a dollar sign on the damage in Haiti, while hundreds are still missing and the death count can reasonably be expected to increase ten-fold (the 2010 quake killed approximately 250,000 people and was not as strong as this one). But getting medical supplies there fast is the most important thing that can be done.
