“Now this is a story all about how
my life got flipped-turned upside down
and I’d like to take a minute,
just sit right there,
I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air.”
Who could forget the iconic theme song from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? It was absolutely epic! It was so epic, in fact, that’s it’s safe to say it’s permanently imprinted into 90s kids’ brains.
Fans of the show will be delighted to know that Will Smith recently reconvened with his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air co-stars. But don’t get too excited; there’s no talk of a reboot any time soon. He only did to raise money for charity.
The charity in question is called Sweet Blackberry. It is run by Karyn Parsons, who played Hilary Banks on the show. Sweet Blackberry produces animated, educational shorts that retell history from an African American perspective.
“Our mission at Sweet Blackberry is to bring little known stories of African American achievement to children everywhere,” a statement from the website reads.
In an effort to raise money for the organization, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air cast auctioned off a lunch with the crew. A British family won the auction. There is no word on how much the family paid.
Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton Banks on the sitcom, published a photo of the reunion on Instagram.
James Avery, who played Uncle Phil on the show, is missing from the photo. Tragically, Avery passed away back in 2013 at the age of 68. Smith credited Avery with giving him some of the “greatest lessons in acting, living, and being a respectable human being.”
Parsons, who was also close with Avery, said that the reunion was bittersweet because of his absence. But there’s no doubt that he would be proud of the work that they are doing.
