Taylor Swift Donates to Sexual Assault Victims’ Charity

On Monday, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift was awarded a symbolic $1 after winning a lawsuit against David Mueller, whom she alleges grabbed her buttocks during a meet-and-greet. Shortly after winning her case, the songstress made a “generous investment” to the Joyful Heart Foundation—a sexual assault victims’ charity run founded by Law and Order: SVU actress Mariska Hargitay.

“@taylorswift13’s courage & generous investment in our work sends a powerful message to survivors: you are not alone,” Hargitay tweeted on Wednesday.

Hargitay did not disclose the exact amount that Swift donated. However, Maile M. Zambuto, CEO of the Joyful Heart Foundation, confirmed that Swift’s donation was indeed copious. Zambuto told the Huffington Post that Swift’s donation was a “generous financial investment in the movement to end sexual violence.”

Swift’s win in court is being hailed not only as a victory for herself, but a victory for survivors of sexual assault everywhere. The 27-year-old said that she hopes to inspire other victims to speak out and fight back.

“I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this,” Swift said in a statement. “My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves.”

Meanwhile, David Mueller (the man accused of assaulting Swift) still denies any wrongdoing.

“I never grabbed her. I never had my hand under her skirt and I can pass a polygraph,” Mueller told ABC News after losing his case.

Mueller, a former radio DJ, complained to TMZ that he hasn’t been able to find work ever since the story broke. He even said that he might have to get plastic surgery and change his identity in order to find employment.

Taylor Swift Helps Lucky Fan With Student Loans

Taylor Swift with fans
Taylor Swift greeting her loyal fans.

Taylor Swift has already made a name for herself for her catchy pop music, and now the star is gaining serious traction as one of the most philanthropic-minded celebrities out there today. Swift has always been very open about how much she values her fans, and lately, she’s taken this appreciation to new heights by making efforts to personally thank some of them in truly creative ways.

Swift’s latest effort to thank one lucky fan involved handmade gifts, photos, and funds to help start chipping away at her college loans. “Swift, who has a reputation for being super-generous with her fans, just helped one Swiftie pay her student loans” reports The Huffington Post. Various media outlets call Swift’s unprecedented fan appreciation “#taylurking,” because of how she finds fans on social media that go above and beyond to support her music, and then surprises them with gifts in equally impressive ways.

Her most recent gift was hand-delivered to Rebekah Bortniker by Swift’s bodyguard. It included a watercolor painting that Swift created, a Polaroid photo, a necklace with a note that said “was mine, now yours,” a “New York Is My Boyfriend” tote bag, and, in a nod to her most recent album 1989, a check for $1,989.

“I really really really really hope you like it,” wrote Swift in a handwritten card inside the package. “I’m not a good painter but I think you’re so beautiful and positive, even though you’re dealing with the stress life brings, so I wanted to make you something.”

This kind of personalized thank-you might seem over the top, but it’s something that Swift has been doing for some time now. Over the holidays, the singer surprised some of her biggest Tumblr fans with Christmas presents and handwritten notes, for example. Swift has also been donating significant funds to worthy causes for many years, even during the earliest stage of her career.

Philanthropic People: Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift Philanthropy

Wholesome musician Taylor Swift might be known for her status as pop music icon and “America’s Sweetheart,” but did you know that she’s also a dedicated philanthropist? At just 24 years old, Swift has contributed greatly to many international charities, and has used her celebrity status to raise awareness about important causes.

The reason Swift is such a model philanthropist is twofold: she is both generous with her money when it comes to donating to charities and relief efforts, and she is genuinely hands on. Swift has donated personal items to charitable auctions such as the Elton John AIDS Foundation, UNICEF, Oxfam International, Feeding America, Donate My Dress, and many others. In 2008, when she was only 18 years old, Swift donated $100,000 to the Red Cross in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to help displaced flood victims. From this point forward, Swift has immersed herself in philanthropic efforts; she is loveable as a pop star and philanthropist because of how genuinely she wants to connect to others in both areas.

Swift does far more for charitable initiatives than simply writing a check. She has performed at many benefit concerts including BBC’s Children in Need concert, which generated thousands of dollars in donations. She has lent her voice to various social justice initiatives, such as PSAs that address hate crimes and discrimination. She even takes time out of her busy touring schedule to spend time with children in hospitals, like on her recent visit to Boston where she sang and danced with 6-year-old Jordan Lee Nickerson. These kinds of efforts to improve the quality of life of people around the world are what make Swift such a model philanthropist.

In the world of philanthropy, Swift’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. She has been recognized by the Do Something Awards, The Giving Back Fund, and the Tennessee Disaster Services for her willingness to help others in need. In 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama presented her with the “Big Help Award” for her dedication to helping those and need and her ability to inspire others through action.

With no signs of slowing in her philanthropic efforts, it seems as though Taylor Swift is committed to both making music, and making the world a better place.
